Seminar on Distributional Implications of enclosure of floodplain commons in Bangladesh

A seminar was held on 8 October to disseminate findings of the British Academy supported project "Distributional Implications of enclosure of floodplain commons in Bangladesh". Dr. Parvin Sultana presented the findings, and Dr. Golam Mustafa (WorldFish Center) and Dr. Robert Arthur (MRAG) also presented papers. There was a lively discussion among 27 participants from donors, NGOs, projects and government, concerning the negative impacts found from floodplain aquaculture and how to regulate it.

Visit of MRAG personnel

Dr. Chris Mees and Dr. Robert Arthur of MRAG, partner in the RIU supported project Integrated Floodplain Management in Bangladesh visited Bangladesh to put on MRAG inputs to the project particularly in communications and fisheries management.

Visit of IDRC Program Officer

Sara Ahmed, Program Officer of IDRC Delhi office, visited Bangladesh to familiarize with the Adaptive learning Network project and meet the project team. She visited five sites (two in north west and three in south west region). During her visit she had meetings with stakeholders, CBO Federation and all partners.

Final workshops of DelPHE supported project in Dhaka and Cantho

The final workshops of DelPHE project were held on 12th and 16th August at BRAC INN, Dhaka and Cantho University, Vietnam respectively. Lessons learned were presented and future directions were discussed in the workshops.

Two short courses under DelPHE Project held

Two new short courses titled 'Flood Loss Assessment Course' and 'Climate Change and Adaptation Course' were held under DelPHE Project at IUB. Participants from different universities, NGOs and development projects attended the courses.

Paper presented at Kathmandu

Dr. Parvin Sultana presented a lead paper on Scaling up Integrated Floodplain management through Adaptive Innovation Asia-Pacific Symposium 4-7 May in Kathmandu, based on results so far from the ALN (IDRC) and IFM (RIU) projects.

Exchange visits and regional workshops

ALN and RIU – A series of exchange visits and regional workshops was held involving all 250 Community Based Organisations involved in the projects. This has enabled CBOs to see good examples of integrated floodplain management.

Course on Sustainable Floodplain Management

FHRC conducted a one day course on Sustainable Floodplain Management in Jessore which was attended by 30 Community Based Organisation leaders, NGO staff and government officials.
